Monkeys Fist - Welcome

Monkey's Fist is a shanty band formed in November 2000, and following several changes has evolved into a four-part group consisting (from left) Alan Collier, Steve Flude, Colin Devey, and John Horsey.

The sound is full and solid, with a tightness resulting from a good understanding of their musical capabilities and an ever-widening repertoire of shanties and maritime songs. There is a strong thread of audience participation, combined with a sense of fun and enjoyment, which emanates from every performance.

They have performed at many of the major maritime and folk festivals, as well as notable folk clubs such as The Grove FC (Leeds), The Black Swan FC (York) and Robin Hood's Bay FC.

New CD - When the sun goes down

So here we have it, our apparently notorious and difficult second recording. In truth, however, as the years pass we are becoming more comfortable with each other (in a very platonic kind of way of course), and if we can do this another couple of hundred times we might even end up knowing what were doing!

Our aim on this recording was to give a true representation of the material Monkey's Fist were performing live around 2010-2011, giving a balance of traditional songs and shanties together with contemporary maritime songs from around the world. Hopefully you will gain as much enjoyment from listening to the CD as we did from recording it.

Many thanks to the songwriters for the songs themselves and for giving us their permission to record them, to the singers who gave us our versions of the traditional songs, to Ken Hall for his patience and expertise, but most importantly to everyone who takes the time to listen.
